Julianna loved her life in rural Oregon. She loved taking care of her farm animals and being part of the local 4H club. Heading home from a weekly meeting, however, she finds her friend Carson playing with fireworks in the woods. Julianna cautions him that he could accidentally start a fire but he rebuffs her warnings. Several hours later, however, she and her sister notice a yellow haze filling the sky. At their parents’ urging, the girls pack up key belongings and quickly evacuate their home ahead of the oncoming wildfire. The fire destroys their home and the family relocates to Portland where Julianna tries to stay under the radar, not letting her new classmates know what happened to their home. She has no interest in being involved in the local climate change protests her family joins, preferring to just put the past behind her. That may prove to be difficult, especially when Carson is suddenly attending her new school, a constant reminder of what she has lost. But when two new friends invite her to join the school’s conservation club, Julianna finds that she may be able to turn her anger into something powerful and truly make a difference in the face of climate change. An inspiring graphic novel that highlights the impact young people can have with simple actions.
